I attended the Columbus Citizens Foundation, or Columbus Day Gala, this past Saturday. The event was held at The Waldorf Astoria, where thousands of Italian-Americans came together to celebrate their Italian heritage & culture. Being full-blooded Italian myself, Italian pride has always run deep within my family. My poppy always made it a point to educate me on my family's history in order to understand where I came from & the possibilities that lie ahead if I continue to stay motivated & focused like my ancestors once did. It was amazing to see so many successful Italians being supported by their loving family & friends. The event really solidified all of my grandfather's lessons & advice throughout my 23 years of life.
As the speeches commenced, each individual spoke about his or her life's mentors. It made me realize just how important it is to listen to those around you & that you truly never know who you just might meet. As I sat in the assembly, I thought about the individuals who have impacted my life. My mother, who helped me become the level-headed woman I am today & who constantly reminds me that peace of mind & self awareness are two of the most important yet difficult things one can achieve. My grandfather, who is my life's biggest cheerleader & who constantly reminds me to never give up on my dreams because someday I will be a star. Or my Aunt Debbie, who is always good for a shoulder to cry on or a drink or two to help make me laugh. Last but not least, my little sister, Gionna, who reminds me to never take life too seriously & to take each day one day at a time.
Who are your mentors? I'd love to hear who or what has inspired you to become the individual you are today! & to my fellow Italian-Americans out there, Happy Columbus Day!
